Lalu Prasad Yadav, the leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), declared on Friday that elections might occur at any time and that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, would fall by August.

“I urge all party employees to be prepared because elections could occur at any time. At a Patna ceremony celebrating his party’s founding day, the former chief minister of Bihar stated, “Modi’s government is very weak and it can fall by August.”

The BJP won 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, which was less than the 272 seats required for a majority. However, with the support of allies like the Andhra-based Telugu Desam Party and the Bihar-based Janata Dal (U), it established the government, allowing Narendra Modi to begin his third consecutive term as prime minister.

Interestingly, ever since Modi 3.0 was introduced, a number of opposition figures have declared that the government will not last more than a few months. Such rumors have been fueled by Lalu’s recent remarks.

Speaking to RJD members, Tejashwi Yadav, the son of Lalu and a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, criticized the JD(U) for betraying its beliefs and siding with the BJP in order to stay in power.

“Those from Janata Dal (U) sided with the BJP after compromising their beliefs out of a desire for power. The only party that has refused to bow down to the BJP is the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Being in charge is not the most important thing. We fight for the underprivileged and defenseless.”

Tejashwi, who is credited with helping the RJD gain four Lok Sabha seats, emphasized that during the most recent Lok Sabha elections, his party’s vote share climbed by 9% while the NDA’s vote share decreased by 6%. Bihar produced nine of the 40 Lok Sabha seats for the INDIA bloc.

Lalu Prasad Yadav founded the RJD in 1997, and from 2004 to 2014, it played a significant role in the Congress-led UPA coalition. The party has historically been supported by Muslims and members of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), projecting an image of it as a political champion of the impoverished.

After the RJD’s electoral success in the northeastern states, the party was recognized as a national party in 2008. That status was, however, lost on July 30, 2010. The RJD is the main political party in Bihar and the official opposition; Tejashwi is now leading the party. Through its partnerships, it also participates in the ruling coalitions of Kerala (LDF) and Jharkhand (mahagathbandhan).

In response to the numerous recent bridge failures in the state of Bihar, Tejasvi addressed RJD activists and the chief minister Nitish Kumar’s administration, saying, “Make public the dates of approval, tender, foundation stone-laying and inauguration of bridges.” Everything will be evident.”
