Hezbollah launched missiles toward northern Israel on Thursday "in retaliation" for an earlier this week Israeli assault in southern Lebanon that killed a prominent commander.
Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, declared that operations would begin on Friday morning. This was the organization's first attack since Tuesday night, when an Israeli airstrike killed its top commander, Fuad Shukr.
Claiming to have fired thousands of Katyusha rockets "in response to the Israeli enemy's attack on... (the southern village of Shama) that killed a number of civilians," the Iran-backed organization made this announcement.
Israel also blamed Lebanese government responsible for Hezbollah attack. “We will not allow anyone to terrorize the people of Israel,” it said in an X post.
Hezbollah's ally and leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was murdered in a Tehran strike hours after Shukr's passing. Israel has refrained from commenting, although Iran and Hamas have accused it of being behind the strike.
Israel also verified on Thursday that Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas' military branch, perished in an airstrike that occurred in Gaza in July.
Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel is at a "very high level of preparedness" in response to potential reprisals for the recent assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.
